Painting rainbows on the wall...

What a weird day at school. It's coming down to the end, but there are a few things that I promised the kids that I couldn't back out on. I just couldn't. ;-)

Last week we did a unit on matter and light, and we talked to the kids about prisms. One of my students brought in a lovely example of one (it used to be a candlestick) made of crystal (Mikasa.) We talked about how a prism acts like water and breaks the sunlight into separate colors.

Then it hit me.

Pollyanna

I had just bought the DVD a couple of weeks ago and watched it for the umpteenth time. A dazed smile crossed my face as I looked at the kids with wide eyes.

"You know, kids, I have the perfect movie that has a few wonderful scenes regarding prisms and how they 'paint rainbows on the walls'. I'll show it to you next week."

Well, the only day it would work this week is Thursday (today) because of the way things work. Friday would be ideal, but the kids have P.E. on Fridays, which means a large block of the day is not mine. (The third grade has lunch/recess then an hour P.E. then last recess--about two hours of time.) Therefore, today had to be the day.

This morning, Ms. M. tells me that our artist friend is coming again today. Well, I wasn't expecting this, but I knew that the kids were waiting for him to show us wire sculpture. I had to squeeze him in. This, of course, cut into some of my instruction time today, so we were a bit squished with time.

We are taking a pretty significant Social Studies test tomorrow, but we were unable to go over the last lesson in the unit. I made a review sheet for them to make studying easier, and I made the missed lesson their homework for tonight. I will, of course, go over that lesson tomorrow with them. It just puts me all out of whack! Heheh.

Flexibility is a key factor in being a good teacher!

I decided to leave Lucky~boy outside for the day. I hate leaving him in the bathroom all day, but I just don't trust him yet. He started piddling on the floor while I was gone about three months or so after I got him. Up till then he had been sooooo good while I was gone. I never had to worry about piddles when I got home. That changed, however, much to my dismay.

I have a fenced-in yard, so I decided to put him out there. My only reservation about doing such a thing is that he barks. If there is a big truck going by or a loud car or another animal or another person, he barks. I don't want to annoy neighbors, but I really hate keeping him in the bathroom.

Well, errrr... I'm not so sure that I'd like to continue doing that. I came home to check on him at lunch time, and he was filthy! It was as if he had rolled around in the sand. In fact, he probably had done that! Little munchkin!

I thought about what was happening around the time that he stopped being such a good little doggie and started piddling on the floor. I think it might correlate with the time that I stopped taking him for regular walks. I'm not sure if that would have an effect on him, but it's completely possible.

Lucky is a cocker spaniel, and from what I've been told, they will act out if they start losing some of that close attention that they so crave. I've been walking him nearly every day for about a week, so after a bit, I will start leaving him to roam freely again. Hopefully, it will be a success!

Until then, it's the bathroom for him.

6 school days left!
