A letter that I received today from a parent...
To Whom It May Concern:
[Student's Name] has our permission to eat lunch from the cafeteria. Today's lunch is acceptable and with 1% milk. If it is what is exactly on today's menu. Any questions or concerns please call today @ [edited out contact numbers]. If you cannot reach us, please substitute with low carbohydrates, high protein, and low sugar. Do not let him go without food or snacks. He is diagnosed as hypoglycemia--low blood sugar.
Thanks,
[Mother's Name]
Uhhhhh.... yeah. Sure. Whatever.
Note to send home:
Send sack lunch.
Good grief! Must I now add "nutrition specialist" to my long list of teacher duties?
Perhaps I am being a bit cold here, but I can only be asked to do so much when I have a classroom full of kids. I do my best to make sure that each of the kids eats every day. Sometimes, though, I just don't know that someone throws away their lunch or gives it away. I'm not out there with them at lunch. We have lunch duty people. I can do my best to be aware if this boy is eating or not, but he is nine years old. I'm fairly certain that he can handle a bit of responsibility. If he decides to eat lunch when it's not "low carbs, high protein, low sugar", will it be my fault? Will I be blamed? If he doesn't eat his snack at snack recess, will I again be to blame? I have enough trouble remembering my own lunch! Also, I am not always aware when they change the menu.
If I were a really good teacher, I'd be on top of all of that!
Anyway... Heheh...
We did not win the lottery, so...
11 school days left!
