Another day in paradise...

It was another busy day in third grade!

We started by re-reading the story of the week (actually, two weeks this time) and answering some basic comprehension questions. Patti, who kind of leads in the Science department, came over and asked when I’d like to begin our lessons for today. They would both be carry-overs from the previous Science day. I looked at her and said, “I still have to give the tests, so we’re not going to be ready until about 11:30.” This might not seem like a lot, but it is. I usually do as I’m told, go with the flow, whichever.

I was starting to get a little stressed, though. Yesterday was mostly devoted to Science, and most of today was to be devoted to finishing up the color wheels that she did in her lesson and making the clay molecules from the atoms that we made. I was not getting any alone time. I was not getting much time with just my students. There were too many things going on at once. Or maybe I was just tired. ;-) Surprisingly, she agreed. I kind of scoped out what I thought would be a good and workable schedule for the day, and it seemed to help.

However, the artist that we had in the other day kind of showed up without us knowing it, which isn’t usually a problem, but I was still giving tests. That means my class missed out on his little demonstration. Also, because the only wall that separates my classroom and Kathy’s is a folding one. That means that the noise from next door (Patti had her class join Kathy’s since they were already done with tests) was really disruptive to my kids who were still taking tests. Ah well. C’est la vie.

Today was also the day that we were going to have a spaghetti lunch. We had all gotten to school a couple of hours early to prepare everything, so once again, my time was not my own. I had no time to mentally prepare for the day. I’ve come to really relish the time that I have in the morning. We don’t begin class until 9:30, so I’m able to come in at a reasonable hour and still have plenty of time to get things ready. It was not to be today; spaghetti had to be prepared.

Instead of having lunch in the cafeteria, we had the chaotic pleasure of having eight-year-olds eating spaghetti at their desks—inside the classroom. Fortunately, there weren’t any sauce catastrophes. That would have been awful! ;-) Ice cream sundae cups, topped with lots of different things, were available for dessert. It went fairly well. We spent nearly our whole prep period (while the kids are at P.E.) cleaning up. The last hour of the day was still to come, and we would be finishing up the molecules, which had been delayed because of the impromptu artist’s visit. Needless to say, the few minutes of recess that I had were spent hiding under my desk where no one could find me. Not really, but I truly had considered it! Heheh.

I really don’t mind being busy. It makes the whole day go very quickly, and this was no exception. Soon, the day was over, and it was time to send those munchkins home for a long weekend. Yay!

I worked out again tonight. I went a couple of weeks ago for the first time in about nine or ten months. It felt good. However, I made a conscious effort to not push myself like I usually do. I’m glad I didn’t because the next day I hurt a whole let less than I did a couple of weeks ago. Yeah… try erasing a chalkboard when you’ve overdone it on the ol’ chest presses. It hurt. The kids stared. I pretended nothing was wrong as I whimpered with each erasing stroke over the large, very large, board. I really need to write a lot less on the board.

Here’s to a great Memorial Day weekend. ;-)

14 school days left!
