Wishing I was there...

Tonight I went to see the new IMAX movie, ”Space Station”. Kathy, Patti, Kathy’s mom, and I all drove down the hill to see a special screening, free for all teachers. Yay! It is good to be a teacher.

All I can say is, “Oh my gosh!”. The film was spectacular. It was done in 3-D, so as I was watching it, not only was I completely amazed, but I felt like I was part of the space station crew. It was as if I were an astronaut, floating in space, and I didn’t even have to go to years of school to do it!

Tom Cruise was the narrator, and he did an excellent job. You could definitely tell it is a passion of his. I realize that he’s “just an actor”, but there was no doubt that he wanted to be on that station, working alongside the pros.

Everyone there, adult and child alike, was Ooo’ing and Ahh’ing throughout the whole thing. Seeing the panels and the equipment up close and personal was indeed a sight to be seen. It truly amazes me all the technology that’s been developed to do the things they do. Not only that, but also that there are sixteen countries working together on the effort! Sixteen! Separately working! Imagine that.

Besides the technology, this film really brought to attention the forethought that must go into each and every mission. There’s not only the amount of supplies that the astronauts will need to survive, but there’s a lot of other stuff that needs to be thought of in advance: equipment, repair supplies and manuals, tools, etc. Also, the way that each piece of the station was brought into space and fitted onto the last piece to make the whole; it’s amazing.

There are also a couple of scenes where you get to see the "blast-off" so closely that you feel like you are one of the crew helping them to take off. Simply spectacular! You're literally under the "rocket's red glare". The sound was incredible. And because it was 3-D, things that going flying in the explosion for blast-off appear to be coming right at you! One piece of shrapnel even hit me in the eye! But I didn't feel it. ;-)

I am telling everyone about it. If you are fortunate to have an IMAX near you, this one should NOT be missed!

I read in TranceJen’s journal today about the newest Abercrombie and Fitch fiasco. Thong underwear for girls is their newest controversial item. Yes, thong underwear for girls 7-14, with things like “eye candy” and “wink wink” written on them. (I can’t say what I think of it any better than she did, so take a look at her thoughts on it. She says them so well, and I couldn’t say it any better! There’s also a link to the article in her entry.) I realize that there are going to be people taht say, "They are just underwear, for crying out loud!" Kids, little girls especially, are already growing up too quickly. Why shove them under the depths of adulthood. Good golly!

Did I mention that everyone should go see the IMAX’s ”Space Station”? Go! Hurry! ;-)
