White figure skates...

I've been watching the Olympics just like so many other people, anticipating the medalists, hoping the best for my favorites, etc. My favorite events, though, are the figure skating competitions. I love to see the skill and artistry swirling around in front of me, gliding across the ice - drawing my attention until the routine is done.

I love it. These Olympic events were no different - except for all the judging controversies. Yuck! We all have our own opinions on what conspired here and there. I'm no different. I was happy to see the Canadian pair get their gold. I was happy to see the smiles on the Russian pair's faces, even though it must have been a difficult time for them, as well. I was glad to see that Sarah Hughes won gold. I was even more happy that the Russian girl, Irina, didn't. It's not that I am completely biased, but I just don't care for her skating. That's all. *smiling* I was heartbroken when another gold medal eluded Michelle Kwan, though I didn't think it was unfair. I enjoyed watching Sasha Cohen skate so beautifully in the short program, and saddened when the long program just didn't go well for her. But the skating done by Sarah Hughes was simply breathtaking. A well deserved gold medal was won by her!

While I was watching the skating programs, I was drawn to the female skaters' boots, and on a lesser level, the men's boots, too. Remember when all female skaters wore skates with white boots, and the men wore the black. It seemed so elegant and well placed; I never imagined that it would be something that I would miss seeing. Who would have thought that such a change would have any effect on me at all. However, I've never been one who claimed to like change. I rarely do. *laughing*

Now the female skaters wear tan skates, or they cover them up with their tights. In my very humble, but oh so outspoken opinion, the boot covered skate is just appalling. There's no beauty in that? Are we supposed to *not* notice that there's a skate under there? Are we supposed to think the skater is barefooted? Does that make the skating dance seem more elegant? I think not.

I want a rule placed in the skating books that all skating boots worn by females are white - not tan and not covered by a stocking. Pashaw!

On the same note, I would like to see the men wearing black-booted skates at all times. It's a much lesser issue since most do wear the black boots, but still... just as a general rule (since we are going into the rulebooks to edit anyway.) And none of that pants-over-the-skate-boot stuff!! ;-)
